How It Works

The 4 Cs is the universal method for assessing the quality and price of any diamond

Our process makes finding the diamond of your dreams simple, stress-free and exciting in 4 easy steps.

Colour Grade

Colour grade refers to how white a diamond is. The whiter, the more rare and expensive. Colour is graded on an alphabetical scale ranging from D (the whitest and most expensive) to Z (with diamonds containing a yellow hue as we move down the scale).

Value tip: the best value is in the F/G/H range, as diamonds in this range appear nearly as white as a diamond in the highest colour range under normal lighting conditions, but cost less.

Clarity Grade

Clarity grade refers to how many tiny marks (referred to as inclusions) are visible on a diamond. Inclusions are graded on a scale from FL (flawless) to I3 (included 3). Typically a diamond above the SI1 clarity range does not contain inclusions visible to the naked eye, but only under magnification.

Value tip: the best value is in the VS/SI1 clarity range, where inclusions can only be seen under 10 times magnification, but are not visible to the naked eye. This clarity range will appear just as beautiful as higher clarity grades, but cost less.

Cut Grade

Cut grade is the greatest indicator of how much a diamond will sparkle. The cut of a diamond is graded on a scale from excellent to poor. As we move down the cut scale, a diamonds poor proportions results in more light being lost and therefore less sparkle. As we move up the cut scale, an excellent cut diamond has amazing proportions that refracts light, resulting in more sparkle and brilliance.

Value tip: at Diamonds Direct, we only carry very good to excellent cut diamonds for maximum sparkle, as its one of a diamonds most important characteristics.

Carat Grade

Carat is a measure of a diamonds weight. The greater the carat size, the larger and more expensive the diamond will be. As carat size increases, the diamond will appear larger from the top down view to the naked eye.

Value tip: carat size is really a personal preference. If a larger carat size is important to you, consider scaling back on colour and clarity grades where possible to maximum carat size while staying within your budget.
